Shen Yun Performing Arts — widely recognized for its ornate costumes, dramatic storytelling, and omnipresent global advertising — is now at the center of a deepening scandal. The company, long promoted as a guardian of ancient Chinese culture, faces mounting protests and cancellations across Europe and North America following explosive allegations of abuse, coercion, and exploitative labor practices.
Former Dancer’s Testimony Opens a Floodgate
The controversy intensified after Chun-ko Chang, a former dancer, filed a civil lawsuit in late 2024 exposing what she describes as years of mistreatment within the organization. Chang claims she was pulled into the troupe at just 13 years old and forced to perform until she finally escaped at 24.
“They told us we were saving culture,” Chang said in her complaint. “But in reality, we were bound by control and exhaustion.”
Her lawsuit alleges dancers routinely worked 80-hour weeks, faced unrelenting pressure to perform, and earned a fraction of what the company generated, often less than $500 per month. Some were reportedly compensated nothing at all during initial training years.
The filing further asserts that Shen Yun’s revenues ultimately benefited Li Hongzhi, the founder of Falun Gong, who is said to have amassed over $249 million in cash, much of it sourced from Shen Yun’s expensive ticket sales that can exceed $200 each.
A Cultural Showcase or a High-Control System?
A core focus of the allegations is the role of Falun Gong, the movement that oversees Shen Yun and is often described by scholars as a cult-like organization that demands strict loyalty to its leader. Former members say Falun Gong’s teachings discourage conventional medical treatment, instructing followers to rely on spiritual intervention instead.
Many dancers come from Feitian Academy of the Arts, a school closely connected with the movement. Ex-students say the environment was rigid, isolating, and designed to reinforce devotion to Falun Gong ideology.
One student, Cheng Qingling, joined at 13 and later suffered a devastating injury during rehearsal. According to testimony, she was denied medical care and instead told to rely on meditation and “faith.” The damage became permanent.
“She was expected to go onstage smiling,” said a former classmate. “Even though she couldn’t properly raise her arm.”
Life on Tour: Exhaustion at Every Turn
Accounts from former performers describe an intense and often dehumanizing touring lifestyle. Dancers traveled long distances by bus with very little rest, sometimes sleeping on seats between shows.
Former members reported extreme restrictions — including being unable to stop for bathroom breaks. Some said they were forced to relieve themselves in bottles on moving buses.
“Sometimes it spilled,” one dancer recalled. “We wiped off what we could and prepared for the next performance.”
Despite such accounts, Shen Yun continues to present itself as an uplifting, spiritual celebration of “5,000 years of civilization,” supported by vast advertising efforts in major cities worldwide.
Europe Pushes Back as Protests Grow
Shen Yun’s 2024 tour in Spain initially drew crowds, but as Chang’s allegations gained attention, protests quickly emerged across France, Germany, Belgium, and other European nations.
Cultural critics, artists, and human rights activists have called for theaters to withdraw the troupe’s bookings.
“No cultural production is worth the suffering of children,” said Marie, a French dance instructor. “This is not heritage — it’s manipulation behind a glittering mask.”
Others who once admired Shen Yun’s striking posters now say they can no longer support the organization.
“I always wondered what the show was like,” said Thomas, a musician from Belgium. “But after learning what those dancers endured, I refuse to be a part of it.”
In Madrid, demonstrators distributed leaflets titled “The Truth Behind Shen Yun” as local art institutions distanced themselves from the troupe.

Attempts to obtain official responses from Shen Yun and the Feitian Academy were met with silence. Specialists in new religious movements say this aligns with familiar patterns among Falun Gong-affiliated groups.
“When criticized, they typically deflect by claiming persecution,” noted Dr. Karl, a sociologist based in Germany. “But this situation is fundamentally about labor abuse, not belief.”
Authorities in the United States are beginning to take notice. The New York State Department of Labor reported in January that it had received multiple inquiries into whether Shen Yun violated wage regulations.
